NUC7i5BNH 32GB memory, very slow cold boot and post error after 57 bios update

$

Hello,

We are experiencing a problem with NUC7i5BNH running with two 16GB SO-DIMMs. After updating the bios from the original 42 to 57 the unit powers up really slow from cold state. It takes about 45s-1min to reach the Intel NUC logo page and it takes several seconds until the "F2/F7/F10" texts appear. Normally all this happens in <10 seconds pressing the power button.

A post error message "(a7) me fw downgrade request mespilock failed" is briefly displayed before the boot process is started. Warm restarts seem normal (=fast) and the memories pass Memtest normally. The unit seems to operating normally besides the very slow cold boot and the post error message. We definitely cannot deliver the unit to a customer in this condition.

We have reproduced the problem with two NUC7i5BNH units. On the second unit we did everything in a very controlled manner. The unit worked perfectly with the 42 version; all problems appeared after the update to 57. I do realise that the problem might be some incompatibility with the Corsair memories but they work individually and also pass memtest together after the slow cold boot has finished. I really hesitate to spend ~400eur just try out a second set of memories.

Things done/tried:

  • BIOS update with proper "Reset bios settings to defaults" after the update
  • Tried bios recovery with jumper and power menu methods -> no effect
  • Tried with memories individually in either slots -> worked fine without problems (fast, no post error)
  • Tried different (Kingston, Adata) smaller memories individually in the unit -> worked fine without problems (fast, no post error)

Things not tried:

  • Different 2 x 16GB modules. Unfortunately we do not have Kingston/AData 2133MHz 16GB modules available. We could get our hands on 2 x 16GB 2400MHz Adata. However the memories are really expensive to just try out. The Corsair modules themselves pass memtest and work individually in the same units. Also their specifications meet the requirements stated in the Technical Product Specification.
  • Any smaller memories in dual channel configuration. We have a chance for this on Monday. However it does not really help us to find out that 2x4 or 2x8 works.
  • Downgrading BIOS to anything earlier to 57 (see BIOS downgrade question below)

Components:

Intel NUC7i5BNH original BIOS 42 updated to 57

2 x Corsair CMSO16GX4M1A2133C15 (16GB, 2133MHz, 15-15-15-36)

No SSD installed at the moment (AData SX8000 will be installed once the memory problem is solved)

BIOS release notes state that you could downgrade from 57 -> 54: "Due to a security enhancement, it will not be possible to go to any BIOS earlier than BIOS 0054."

However the BIOS update readme states the following: "If you are trying to downgrade to a previous BIOS version and its Intel® ME Firmware version is older than that currently on the motherboard, then the downgrade is NOT supported."

The ME FW in 57 is newer than in 54 (11.8.50.3425 vs 11.6.27.3264). Is the downgrade to 54 allowed/supported or not?

Questions:

  1. What is this post error message "(a7) me fw downgrade request mespilock failed"? We have definitely not downgraded anything. Is the unit internally trying to perform some kind of revert to previous bios when the post is taking too long? Could not find any google hits on NUC with this error.
  2. Is the BIOS downgrade from 57 to any previous version allowed/supported? Since the documentation would indicate that we cannot downgrade (see above), we seem stuck with 57.
  3. Has any of the relevant BIOS settings changed between 42 to 57? These do not seem to be listed in the release notes.
  4. Are there any BIOS settings we could try to change? Eg. memory timings or the "Round trip latency optimisation".
  5. Anything else we could try?

We provide Intel NUC solutions as a business and have installed several hundred units since 2013. This is the first time we experience this kind of problem. We have also provided NUC6 and NUC7 units with 32GB memory without problems but the NUC7i5BNH+Corsair 2x16GB combo is our first.

Any help is well appreciated!

Best Regards,

Henri / TeraStore

New NUCs capable of passing through Atmos?

I'm trying to figure out if the NUC7i3BNH is capable of passing through an Atmos signal? In the specs of the NUC it reads "7.1 digital". So I'm not quite sure if this includes a 5.1.2 channel for example. My setup consists of a Denon Atmos-Receiver and I want to run Kodi Krypton.

Does anybody know what the digital microphone protocol on the NUC7i7 and 7i5BN boards is?  I believe it may be I2S but there is no clarification on what the data format and clock speeds are.   I am building a custom case for this board and want to set up Microsoft Cortona, however I need a digital microphone input to do so.

NUC6CAYH Freezing/Crashing... LAN troubles, etc

I picked up a NUC6CAYH with the plan of using it for Libreelec.  I realize this is not a supported OS, but there are many others using the NUC6CAY for this without issue.

I have 2 x HyperX Impact 4GB 1866MHz DDR3L CL11 SODIMM 1.35V HX318LS11IB/4 installed. (tested with memtest for 48 hours without issue.)  I have used both a Samsung 830 SSD, and an ADATA SP600

I have consistent crashing and freezing with Libreelec, that others are not experiencing.  Sometimes it runs without crashing for an hour or so, sometimes only minutes.

I have experienced freezing in the visual bios, requiring a hard reset, at least a few times, and with both 0041, and 0042 bios.

I decided to install windows 10, as a test of an "approved" OS.  Windows Setup experienced a crash during install, and after install, the Win 10 install itself experienced a BSOD.  Additionally with Win 10, I am unable to install the LAN driver, no realtek lan is recognized... nothing is shown in the device manager either (no, it is NOT disabled in the bios)

I can gather info if it would help, but I am thinking there may be something wrong with my NUC.

What needs to be done to get a replacement?

NUC7i7BNH - Hardware Acceleration Issues After Installing the Latest Graphics Driver

$

Hi,

System Info:

- BIOS: BNKBL357.86A.0057

- Graphics Driver: 23.20.16.4849 (15.60.0.4849)

- Monitor: 3440x1440@100Hz via USB-C to DP1.2

- OS: Windows 10 1607 (Anniversary Edition)

Issue Description:

Web-Browser (Chrome, Firefox) hardware acceleration malfunctions with 23.20.16.4849 graphics driver.

Fullscreen video playback flickers (turns black for a second), and all paused videos (in other browser tabs) show a green screen.

Issue only appears after updating GPU driver from 22.20.16.xxxx to 23.20.16.xxxx.

- Rolling-back the update solves this issue.

- Disabling hardware acceleration in the web-browser options also solves this issue.

Questions:

- Is the 23.20.16.4849 graphics driver fully compatible with Windows 10 1607 (Anniversary Edition)?

- My monitor does not support HDR contend. Why update from version 22.20.16.xxxx, which works great?

- In general, would you recommend using video hardware acceleration (QuickSync or DXVA2) on NUC7i7BNH?

Regards,

Erez.

Hello,

When you start a game/playing video/music before plugging earphones, the application was run "without audio device" and will no longer output any audio even you plug in earphones. Is there a way to disable NUC's front-panel audio jack sensing?

NUC6CAYH - Ubuntu 16.04 - Auto Power-On every day?

Hi All,

I just purchased an Intel NUC to be used with Ubuntu 16.04,

I have found a gui utility to schedule the machine to turn off each night,

However, I am trying to find a way to get the machine to auto power-on/Start up each morning.

I have tried the Power - Scheduled Wake Up options in the BIOS, however it doesn't work. It will not power on.

Is this technically possible, ie, schedule a Non-Windows OS on Intel NUC to power-own each morning from either the BIOS or a GUI App (I dont want to manually run a script each day).

Thanks.

NUC7 i3 i5 i7 BNH 4TB Internal Storage?

Samsung's 4TB SSD is on the market & 9mm 4TB HDD's are imminent. Has anyone located specs, or will Intel comment upon the capability of NUC7 BNH's mainboards to operate with an M.2 boot drive and a 4TB secondary? (i.e. the maximum 2.5" drive capacity for the mainboard with an M.2 SSD as a system boot drive)

Thanks

UEFI and PXE/WDS for 7th Gen NUC Non-functional

So this was mentioned in another discussion that was marked as answered but looks to have just been abandoned by the original poster (Thread 115121).  I am seeing UEFI PXE boot problems on the 7th gen nucs similar to what was mentioned in that thread.  We have 50+ of each of the following NUC models...D34010WYK, NUC5i3RYK, NUC6i5SYK.  All of them transitioned fairly well from Legacy PXE Boot to UEFI PXE Boot (Some did need BIOS updates but that is to be expected).  However our newest stock of NUC7i5BNK's will not boot to PXE in UEFI (BIOS updated and all).  The options exist in the BIOS options and the device recognizes and serves up the option to network boot.  Selecting the IPv4 boot option event initiates the process and sees the network (Media detected message), but it wont go any further.  I can even flip the device to non-secure boot non-UEFI, and PXE boot the device perfectly fine using Legacy network boot.  I would REALLY prefer to move forward and not build the newest NUCs in legacy mode while all the older model NUCs transition over to UEFI and secure boot.

Another question in the BIOS the temps. are way higher then when booted into Linux, is this normal?

INTEL NUCi7 3D MVC ISSUE

Coming from Intel NUC DN2820 I was able to play 3D MVC with Kodi with new Intel Media SDK, I just purchased Intel NUC NUC7i3BNK and 3D playback doesn't work.

On the Intel NUC DN2820, the resolution was set 1920X1080p 3D and everything works great

On the Intel NUC NUC7i3BNK either I set the 1920X1080p 3D or  3820X2160p 3D doesn't work

The Intel Media SDK was supposed to allow 3D MVC to work, I did some testing and found the HDMI 2.0 connection is the one causing the issue and any NUC with HDMI 2.0 doesn't work/

NUC6CAYH unable to boot, ring led status stuck in fade mode, BIOS defaults does not solve

$

Hi,

I've been using a linux based tool (GitHub - milesp20/intel_nuc_led: Intel NUC7i[x]BN and NUC6CAY LED Control for Linux ) to change the Ring LED on the NUC6CAYH to different colors and modes.

I may have stumbled upon a situation where the NUC is unable to boot after the ring led has been set to fade instead of being on solid.

To create the problem:

-     Set the ring led to "sw controlled" in the Visual Bios

-     Boot into linux

-     Load the driver and set the ring led to fade slowly in color white

-     Reboot the NUC, it is completely stuck, the ring led is fading slowly white but the UEFI does not seem to go past POST or even offer any options to enter the setup menu

To temporary fix the problem, clear CMOS as suggested here: Clearing CMOS on Intel® NUC

-     Plug AC power in

-     3 second power button trick to get into "safe mode"

-     Enter setup, load defaults (F9) and save

This sets the ring led back to "power status" and makes the NUC bootable again.

Here comes the tricky part:

After booting successfully with the new BIOS settings I rebooted the NUC again and set the ring led back to "SW controlled", thinking it would be back to defaults (off) and boot.

But after saving and rebooting the NUC the ring led is fading slowly white again, I hoped the setting (and possibly bug) would be gone.

Now I am unable to ever set the ring LED back to "SW controlled" since it renders the NUC unbootable.

Could this be a BIOS issue?

I'm running the latest version: "AYAPLCEL.86A.0042.2017.1117.1918"

Sincerely, Koen

NUC 7i5BNH HDMI issue : Monitor doesn't detect it

Hi

Since today my monitor doesn't detect the nuc when I turn it on.

The NUC led seems to tell the NUC is working, just that the monitor doesn't detect it.

Like other users I had some issues with the sleep mode, by disconnecting the hdmi cable and plug it back I was able to have the monitor detecting it, but today I have no luck.

What should I do ? I'm up to date with the bios and all the other drivers.

New NUC7i7BNH - CPU Core Temp Running at 70c While Idle

$

Hello,

I recently purchased a NUC7i7BNH and installed a 250GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD and 8GB of Crucial RAM.  I flashed the BIOS to BNKBL357.86A.0060.2017.1214.2013 and installed Windows 10 Pro with no problems.  However, the fan was running louder than I'd like.  I went into the BIOS to adjust the Fan Control Mode to "Quiet," but that didn't seem to have any effect.  I even changed it to "Fanless" and still no improvement.  The fan constantly runs at 3,400 RPM according to the BIOS, but I noticed that the CPU Core Temp is running at 70 degrees.  I wouldn't expect the temp to be that high in the BIOS.  Am I mistaken or is there something wrong with this unit?

Thanks in advance for any input.
