NUC8i5BEH ESXi 6.7 U1 Install fails

Hi all together,

I just recieved my new NUC8i5BEH today and tried to install the newest ESXi Version available (ESXi 6.7U1. I also get the well known message "Shutting down firmware services... Using simple offset UEFI RTS mapping policy." like a lot of users had while trying to install ESXi on the 8i7xxx models. I know that intel delivered a brand new bios version for the 8i7xxx models and after that esxi installation and boot up worked for these models.

The NUC has the newest Bios version installed, BECFL357.86A.0048.2018.0919.2013.

Is there any workaround for this issuse?

What I tried so far:

- Installed ESXi to an USB Stick by using an other computer and then tried to boot from it with the nuc - same error

- Updated NUC Bios from Version 0041 to 0048

- different usb sticks

same issue different model: Installing ESXi on NUC8I7HNK - failing

Cheers and thank you in advance!

NUC7i7DNKE EDID emulation modes

So, first, let me ask if my understanding is correct. I have a (generally) headless NUC. Currently, I have the NUC set to "headless display emulation". In that case, if the machine is booted with an AV receiver off, I would expect for the "virtual display" to be created. Further, if coming in via VNC or other remote display technology, the host display settings may even be changed, and that would still work. If I turn on the display (super rare), then, the display settings would reset to whatever the display is (1080p). All true?

So, now what happens when I turn the display off? The doc merely says if booted .... On previous NUC models, we always had a problem with that case, the display would blank, turn itself off, etc.

The other option is "persistent display emulation", I understand this to be a forced display mode. i.e., if the EDID stored is for 1080p display, and, a game is started that's 720p or whatever, too bad. Is that correct? It will not change the display resolution.

I already know that "no display emulation" means turn off the video output, as, I end up with a blank screen when using AMT.

Just wanting to make sure I understand the choices.

My scenario is this - almost always, on any boot, this NUC will have no display. But I want AMT to still work, and, I want things started up via VNC or other similar technologies to also be able to use and set the resolution on the primary "display".

NUC5i3RYH redémarre tout seul après arrête

Bonjour,

Merci

My NUC ran fine for a year. I reinstalled an OS. Then when using the system the operating system/mouse/keyboard/running process hour glass, would freeze. This was with Ubuntu. I put on Windows 10. The system was unstable and would blue screen. I looked at the memory.dmp. It indicated possible overheating, although that is speculation. I've been testing the system with Ultimate Boot CD. All the tests I've run memroy/cpu stress/ some others, have Passed. I also replaced the HDD and had the same problem. This only happens while in the Operating System. I don't know why this system freezes and am looking for ways I can determine it. Hopefully, fix and use the NUC again. It's a:

Thunderbolt BIOS Settings not passing through for "Legacy"

I have a NUC7i7BNH, and would like to prevent the approval being required when new devices are plugged in via Thunderbolt 3.  There is a service running on the machine that simply looks for new connections - the service is running while no one is logged in.

Operating System: Windows 10

In the BIOS, I have set:

Security -> Security Features -> Thunderbolt Security Level -> Legacy Mode

However, in Windows, we receive the prompt that the device needs to be approved, and when you go to "About", the Thunderbolt Controller "Security Level" is "User Authorization (SL1)"

All items are on their latest versions (Drivers, BIOS, etc).

Is there a step missing?

NUC8i7HVK displays grey screen till Windows welcome screen

Hi All,

I recently got myself a NUC8i7HVK and intend to use it as HTPC to play 4K HDR remuxes from my NAS.

Added 2 sticks of Crucial 8GB DDR4 2400MHz ram and Samsung 970 Evo 256GB M.2 SSD. OS is Windows 10 1803. AMD drivers is 18.9.3

The NUC is connected using HDMI to my TV LG OLED 55B7 via my AV receiver Onkyo TX-RZ800 to a HDMI 2.0a port. Post boot up, I get a grey screen on my TV till the point the Windows 10 welcome screen comes. If I try and go into the BIOS I still get a grey screen. Hence to configure the NUC I had to connect it to an old 13" AOC monitor using HDMI to VGA adapter. Prior to this I was using a 3rd Gen i5 NUC which didnt have any such issue.

I have already upgraded the BIOS to the latest available and still have the same issue on both the HDMI outs and with multiple HDMI cables.

The same AV receiver has the following connected and none of them have this issue:

1. My gaming PC comprising 2xGTX980Ti in SLI and i7 5930k. OS is same as NUC. I can go into the BIOS and make changes.

2. XBox One X

3. PS4 Pro

4. Satellite TV box.

Connecting the new NUC to the old AOC display everytime I need to change a setting is not feasible. Neither do I want to bypass the AV Receiver as that would defeat the purpose of using the NUC as HTPC.

Please help me in resolving the issue.

BUGs in BIOS 0048 for NUC8i7BE

I encountert 2 issues with this version:

In the power settings menu I just unchecked the high performance checkbock, changed some values in the manual area and then tried to check the balanced preset checkbock. This crashed the EFI (it froze) and I had to restart with the power button.

The following also occured with the previous version: For some reason sometimes after changing the cooling settings (even selecting another preset) can lead to erratic fan behavior, both in Windows and in UEFI. When the minimum temperature threshold is crossed, the fan immediately spins up to max, stays there for a while and then VERY slowly slows down. This can be seen very nicely in the fan curve when in UEFI - it starts with a very steep slope (about a second), plateaus at around 4000 and then very slowly comes down again (at least 20-30 seconds with a constant and smooth slowdown). The only way to get rid of that is to disconnect the NUC from power for a few seconds (I push the power button for good measure, too. Old habit to deplete the curquites more thoroughly).

This, by the way, was the out of the box behavior I got. Good thing I am rather tech savy.

For good measure you find my system settings and system test results I did for another thread attatched. Note: I redacted the MAC adresses in the system information file. These tests ran on stock settings (only balanced mode was active instead of high performance). The erratic fan behavior was NOT present then. It came up again when I changed the cooling settings back to what I know gives an adequately silent fan curve.

Best wishes

NUC8I7BEH esxi thunderbolt passthrought

This is how it looks after attaching a thunderbolt unit to the nuc:

26HUXcX.png

After having problems enabling the devices for passthrough i found this information:

"After 6.5u1, the manage-hardware-PCi devices page updated to show that all three items are behind a PCI bridge. This explains the behavior, VMware documentation below.

From KB 2142307- PCI Functions behind legacy PCI Bridges VMware strongly recommends that PCI Functions assigned for VMDirectPath I/O be placed behind PCI Express root ports or switch downstream ports.

VMware discourages VMDirectPath I/O assignment of PCI Functions behind conventional PCI bridges or PCIe-to-PCI/PCI-X bridges. PCI Functions behind PCIe to PCI/PCI-X bridges or PCI conventional bridges must be collectively assigned for VMDirectPath I/O to the same virtual machine.

These bridges take ownership of PCI transactions sent by PCI Functions behind them by placing the bridge’s PCI requester ID on the transactions. This forces the ESXi host to program IOMMU translations using the PCI Bridge’s requester ID, implying that all PCI Functions behind the bridges must be placed in the same IOMMU domain and therefore be collectively assigned to the same virtual machine."

Since im unsure how NUC8I7BEH is configured i wanted to see if it follows it or not.

Bluetooth suddenly stopped working on NUC6i7KYB

I am running 64 bit Windows 10 and my bluetooth suddenly stopped working.

Device manager does not show bluetooth anymore.

I tried disabling bluetooth @ BIOS, reboot and enable but it didn't work.

I also tried reinstalling the bluetooth driver but that also didn't work.

I can I fix this ? Or how do I found out whether the onboard bluetooth has gone bad?

Support for Consumer IR

I would like to use the consumer IR built-in to the NUC to control other devices on Windows 10.  Are there any programs that will learn/recognize IR commands?  If not, is there any documentation for how to programatically access the IR so I could write my own?

New Express BIOS update not working, unhandled exception

$

Hi all,

just downloaded the "new" but strange  Express BIOS update for Windows for one of my NUC7i3BNK

BNKBL357.86A.0071.EB.msi

and I tried also

JYGLKCPX.86A.0046.EB.msi for a different NUC 7CJY

But it doesn't work. It doesn't even give an output, it simply closes itself after starting it. Guys please, testing before releasing isn't a bad idea!

@development team: The MSI says: "Product: ExpressBiosUpdate -- Configuration completed successfully."

But .NET Runtime states:

Application: EBU.UI.EXE.exe

Frameworkversion: v4.0.30319

Application closed due to unhandled exception

Exception: System.FormatException

   bei System.DateTimeParse.Parse(System.String, System.Globalization.DateTimeFormatInfo, System.Globalization.DateTimeStyles)

   bei ExpressBiosInstaller.MainWindow.CompareOnDeviceBios()

   bei ExpressBiosInstaller.MainWindow..ctor()

I even tried manually, extracting and installing the firmware with the DPinst. Then the device manager shows under "Firmware" BIOS0071 with a yellow exclamation mark  - but rebooting doesn't install the new BIOS.

We have UEFI / Secure Boot enabled and password set, but I guess there's something wrong inside the Express BIOS files...

Executing the .EXE itselfs gives following error:

Name of application: EBU.UI.EXE.exe, Version: 1.0.0.0, Timestamp: 0x5ba97931

Name of modul: KERNELBASE.dll, Version: 10.0.17134.407, Timestamp: 0x99042cc0

Error offset: 0x000000000003a388

ID of process: 0x1f68

P.S.: I have "Secure Boot" enabled which also denies updating with the .BIO file from USB Stick. Maybe this is the same issue?

Best regards

Nuc Hades - Question of version

hi,

i bought an INtel NUC Hades yesterday - version is NUC817HVB  (CPU-Z tells it).

My question concerns this version-number: NUC817HVB - i wanted to get an NUC817HVK!

Does exists an B-Version?

GPU-Z shows me an information, which confuse me. Bus Width shows 256 Bit and the Bandwidth tells 51.2 GB/s.

K-Versions shows 1024 Bit Bus Width and more than 200 GB/s.

Thanks for your help - perhaps i'm gonna to send this NUC Hades back.

NUC7PJYH: BSODs and hangs after BIOS update - 45 and 46

$

The first BSOD (KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) happened soon after BIOS update from 44 to 45.

After updating to 46 they became quite frequent. The last one said "SYSTEM_SERVICE-EXCEPTION".  Sometimes the PC just hangs typically, while in browser.  Once it hang at "Welcome" screen.

Before updating to 45 the system was rock solid.

Has anyone else experienced such problems after updating the BIOS?

Thanks,   Peter

Specify the day when DSA checkcs for new Drivers?

Hi all,

Is there a way to determine the day Intels DSA checks for new drivers?

I only find the possibility to set the frequency in my settings (never, daily, weekly, monthly),
but I don't have any information WHEN the day X is.

I would like to check monthly, but on a fixed day, always on the first day of each month for my NUC8i5,
while I would like to check a second system (NUC6CAYS) on the 15th of each month.

Is there any "hidden" setting possibility for this

or is there perhaps a way to run the check using the Windows task scheduler?

NUC8i5BEK BIOS default boot order?

Just got my first NUC and planning an unattended Win10 install from USB. Will the NUC boot from the USB by default? M.2 SSD is brand new and empty. Reason for asking is that I want to use only power + network cables and would like to avoid the need for display to make any BIOS changes in order to boot from USB.

Thanks!
